Pride & Prejudice is Austen’s most famous novel and probably the most adapted. All the television and movie adaptations of the novel on IMDb are listed below, excluding podcasts, audio books and shorts.
- Pride & Prejudice (1938) — First Jane Austen tv production. It was performed live and not recorded so it no longer exists.
- Pride & Prejudice (1940) — Film adaptation with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier. The women wear hoop skirts and Lady Catherine is not so bad. Screenplay co-written by Aldous Huxley.
- Pride & Prejudice (1949) — Philco Television Playhouse edition. Thought to be lost.
- Pride & Prejudice (1952) — BBC tv version thought to be lost. Peter Cushing as Mr. Darcy.
- Orgoglio e Pregiudizio (1957) — Italian tv version with Virna Lisi as Lizzie.
- Pride & Prejudice (1958) — Another BBC tv version thought to be lost.
- De Vier Dochters Bennet (1961) — Dutch television version.
- Orgullo y Prejuicio (1966) — Spanish television version. Thought to be lost.
- Pride & Prejudice (1967) — Another BBC version.
- Pride & Prejudice (1980) — Another BBC version, with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul. Written by Fay Weldon.
- Pride & Prejudice (1995) — The gold standard of Austen adaptations. Written by Andrew Davies for the BBC. With Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.
- Bridget Jones´s Diary (2001) — Modern update ditches the Bennet sisters to focus on the Lizzie/Darcy/Wickham triangle. Renée Zellweger plays Bridget Jones (Lizzie), Colin Firth as Mark Darcy (Darcy), and Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver (Wickham).
- Pride & Prejudice: A Latter Day Comedy (2003) — Mollywood version recasts the Bennet sisters as college roommates at BYU. Curiously, they chose to make Wickham a bigamist instead of just a cad. Weird choice considering LDS history.
- Bride & Prejudice (2004) — Bollywood lite version directed by Gurinder Chadha. The Bennets have been recast as the Bakshis of Amritsar, India. Aishwarya Rai as Lalita (Lizzie), Martin Henderson as Darcy, Naveen Andrews as Balraj Uppal (Bingley). There are a couple of musical numbers but it’s not a full scale musical.
- Pride & Prejudice (2005) — Theatrical version directed by Joe Wright. With Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. Not my favorite version but an interesting take on Darcy, who appears to be more shy and socially awkward than proud.
- Lost in Austen (2008) — P&P superfan Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper) finds a portal in her bathroom that leads to the world of the novel. She and Lizzie Bennet (Gemma Arterton) trade places and Amanda takes Lizzie’s place in the narrative of the book. This provides an interesting spin on the story but Jemima’s ridiculous hair that she refuses to change to fit the time period bugs me. You could make a straight version of P&P with this cast (minus Jemima). With Elliot Cowan as Darcy, Tom Mison as Bingley, Alex Kingston as Mrs. Bennet, Hugh Bonneville as Mr. Bennet, Morven Christie as Jane, Tom Riley as Wickham, Christina Cole as Caroline, Lindsay Duncan as Lady Catherine.
- A Modern Pride & Prejudice (2011) — Can’t find any info on this one.
- The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012) — Modern vlog style retelling of P&P. 100 episodes.
- Austenland (2013) — Not really a P&P adaptation but it is P&P-centric. Keri Russell plays Jane, a woman obsessed with P&P and especially Mr. Darcy, as portrayed by Colin Firth in the 1995 BBC series. She books a trip to a Jane Austen-themed resort in the UK, a sort of cosplay regency England with a guaranteed romance (with an actor portraying a 19th century character). Things do not go as planned. With JJ Feild, Jane Seymour, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie, James Callis. Seymour´s husband is played by the actor who played Mr. Hurst in the 1995 P&P.
- Pride & Prejudice (2014) — 6 episode UK series. Little info available.
- Before the Fall (2016) — Ben Bennet is an arrogant attorney. Lee Darcy is a factory worker with issues. A gay modern day reimagining of P&P.
- Pride & Prejudice & Zombies (2016) — An alternate reality Regency England with zombies. This is a super fun mashup with a good cast. Lily James as Lizzie, Sam Riley as Darcy, Jack Huston as Wickham, Bella Heathcote as Jane, Douglas Booth as Bingley, Matt Smith as Mr. Collins, Charles Dance as Mr. Bennet, Lena Headey as Lady Catherine.
- Orgulho e Paixão (2018) — Brazilian version with 100 episodes. I think it’s a telenovela.
- Pride, Prejudice & Mistletoe (2018) — Hallmark Channel Christmas movie with Lacey Chabert as Darcy.
- Christmas At Pemberley Manor (2018) — Yet another Hallmark Channel P&P Christmas pastiche.
- Pride & Prejudice, Cut (2019) — An American vlogger is cast as Lizzie in a British production of P&P.
- Pride & Prejudice: A New Musical (2020) — Stage musical.
- An American in Austen (2024) — Hallmark Channel movie that appears to ripoff the plot of Lost in Austen. I haven’t seen it but there’s a trailer featuring the first ballroom scene where Darcy insults Lizzie and the ‘American’ tells him off.
- Pride & Prejudice (TBD) — A new Netflix production starring Emma Corrin as Lizzie, Jack Lowden as Darcy, Olivia Colman as Mrs. Bennet, Rufus Sewell as Mr. Bennet, Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine.
