Sanditon

I thought there was only one version of Sanditon, the 2019–2023 BBC adaptation written by Andrew Davies. But apparently there was a 2014 version that I never heard of. Sanditon is one of the two unfinished novels that Austen left at her death, the other being The Watsons. She progressed farther with Sanditon than The Watsons, but it is still just a fragment of 11 chapters. There have been a number of continuations written by contemporary authors. Austen’s niece, Anna Austen Lefroy also tried her hand at completing it.

  • Sanditon (2014) — All I know about this version is what appears on IMDb. The screenplay is credited to Chris Brindle, directed by Steve Dorrington. I am not familiar with any of the cast.
  • Sanditon (2019–2023) — The infamous Andrew Davies version. The two primary heroines, Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams) and Georgiana Lambe (Crystal Clarke) are fine, Tom and Mary Parker (Kris Marshall & Kate Ashfield) are fine. My problem is with the outrageous sex scenes and the incest plot. Yes, there´s an incest plot. Jane is probably spinning in her grave. They spread this across 3 seasons and the actor who seemed destined to be Charlotte’s love interest, Theo James, bailed after season 1. I did not care for the replacement love interest.
