We Are Lady Parts

We Are Lady Parts is a British sitcom about a punk band. The members of the band are all Muslim women of various ethnicities. Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey) is the lead singer and plays rhythm guitar. She’s tough, standoffish, and the only member of the group who doesn’t wear a headscarf. Her day job is halal butcher. Bisma (Faith Omole) plays bass. She is an Earth mother type, married with a daughter, and she self publishes a comic book called “Period: Apocalypse Vag”. Ayesha (Juliette Motamed) is the drummer. She’s an Uber driver by day and a bit of a hothead, freely insulting her customers. The band’s manager Momtaz (Lucie Shorthouse) wears a full burqa and smokes like a chimney. Her day job is selling cheap lingerie to Muslim women. All four of them swear like drunken sailors.

When Saira decides they need a lead guitarist, they recruit Amina (Anjana Vasan), a PhD student in microbiology who teaches guitar. Amina is an excellent guitarist but there’s one big obstacle to her joining the band: stage fright so severe it causes her to vomit every time she plays in front of a live audience. Thus begins this heartfelt and hilarious series from Nida Manzoor.

These women are punks but they are also practicing Muslims. Amina hides her band involvement from her best friend Noor (Aiysha Hart). Noor tends to be judgmental and considers everything outside the straight and narrow as haram. Saira is commitment shy and pushes her boyfriend away when he tries to define their relationship. Ayesha is a closeted lesbian. Bisma fights with her daughter. All of this provides grist for their songs, with titles like “Voldemort Under My Headscarf”, “Bashir With the Good Beard”, “Ain’t No One Gonna Honour Kill My Sister But Me”, and “Malala Made Me Do It” (Malala Yousafzai herself appears in the fantasy video for the song).

There’s a scene early on where the girls are riding in Ayesha’s car when The Proclaimers song “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” comes on the radio. They joyously sing along, like the boys in Wayne’s World bobbing their heads to “Bohemian Rhapsody”.

So far there are only two short seasons of We Are Lady Parts, 12 episodes total. Hopefully there will be a third season. You can watch it on Peacock in the US.
